This is a large Imari charger made of a high fire ceramic for lasting durability.  The charge is all hand thrown with a hand painted design of Japanese chrysanthemum flowers, various garden scenes and foo- dogs. Kiln marks on the bottom indicate an earlier time period.

The foo-dog is traditionally known in China as an imperial guardian lion.  It is said to be half lion and half dog with the spunk of both.  They were a mythological animal that protected the spirits of ancestors past. Statues of foo dogs have traditionally stood in front of Chinese Imperial palaces and temples from the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. - 220 A.D.), and were believed to have powerful mythic protective benefits.

The charger measures 15 1/2" across (39 cm) by 2" high (5 cm).
